My name is Kiara Smith, and I’m a junior at Purdue studying Health Sciences on a pre-med track with minors in Biology, Psychology, and English. I joined Stempower in the second semester of my sophomore year after I heard about their mission to bring STEM education to Girl Scouts via college mentors. I was looking for an opportunity to be involved in the community in a way that related to my major, and I loved the idea of creating curriculum about science and medicine and using it to help local girls get excited about STEM. Plus I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make valuable Girl Scout Cookie connections! I worked with a couple of Girl Scout troops and a local kindergarten class before deciding to run for exec at the end of my sophomore year.
Outside of Stempower, I enjoy running, playing video games, and stressing out about the MCAT but not actually studying for it. Working with Stempower and all of our amazing mentors has been an incredibly fulfilling experience, and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with an amazing exec team who have helped Stempower expand to reach even more K-12 students. I can’t wait to see where the organization goes in the future!
